How to spot a fake AI training job

Real AI training platforms pay you. Fake ones find a way to make you pay them. Here's how to tell the difference.

Last updated 20 October 2026

Signs an offer is fake

  • You're asked to pay. A "registration fee", a paid training course, a deposit to "unlock" tasks or withdraw your earnings. Real platforms never charge you to work for them.
  • It starts on WhatsApp, Telegram or a text message. Someone you don't know offers easy online work. Real platforms recruit through job postings on their own sites, and you apply there.
  • You're hired without a test. Real platforms screen people: a skills test, an ID check, often an interview. An instant offer with no checks is a warning sign.
  • They send you money first. A cheque or transfer to buy equipment, with the change sent back or on to someone else. The payment bounces later and you lose what you sent.
  • The pay doesn't fit the work. High hourly pay for liking videos, rating products or "simple tasks" that need no skill. Well-paid AI training roles ask for real expertise.
  • They want things no employer needs. Your bank PIN or password, card details, a crypto wallet, or access to your phone or computer.
  • The address is wrong. The email or website isn't the platform's own domain, or is a look-alike with an extra word or letter.

Check the address

Before you apply or reply, check that the website and any email come from the platform's own domain. These are the domains the big platforms use, from their own pages (checked 20 October 2026):

  • Mercor: mercor.com, work.mercor.com, talent.docs.mercor.com
  • Outlier: outlier.ai, app.outlier.ai
  • DataAnnotation: dataannotation.tech, app.dataannotation.tech
  • Alignerr: alignerr.com, app.alignerr.com
  • micro1: micro1.ai, jobs.micro1.ai, talent.micro1.ai, payroll.micro1.ai
  • Handshake AI: joinhandshake.com, app.joinhandshake.com, ai.joinhandshake.com, ai-support.joinhandshake.com, support.joinhandshake.com
  • Invisible Technologies: invisibletech.ai, invisible.co, meridial.ai, marketplace.inv.tech
  • Mindrift: mindrift.ai, mindrift.toloka.ai
  • Prolific: prolific.com, app.prolific.com, participant-help.prolific.com
  • SuperAnnotate: superannotate.com, sme.careers, docs.sme.careers
  • Appen: appen.com, crowdgen.com, app.crowdgen.com, help.crowdgen.com, jobs.lever.co
  • Welo Data: welodata.ai, app.welodata.ai, welocalize.com, weloglobal.com, jobs.lever.co

Every listing on aitrainers.jobs links to the platform's own job board, and each job page names its official source.

If something feels wrong

  • Stop replying, and don't send money or documents.
  • Look the role up on the platform's own site. If it isn't there, it isn't real.
  • Report it to the platform, and to the authorities: in the UK to Action Fraud, in the US to the FTC. The FTC's guide to job scams has more examples.
  • If you've already paid, call your bank straight away.

What we do

We only list roles from platforms' own job boards and check every listing against them every hour. We never charge job seekers, and we will never contact you on WhatsApp or Telegram. Seen a listing here that looks wrong? Every job page has a "Tell us" link, or see About & contact.
